Bernie’s Run is a valued tradition celebrating our nation’s birthday since 1984. Due to the current situation facing our community with COVID-19, our 3 mile Run/Walk will be a virtual race for 2020.

Participants are welcomed and encouraged to find new and exciting routes to challenge themselves when participating in Bernie’s Run this year. Wilkes-Barre City streets will not be used for this event. If you are looking to stay close to the course and remain relatively flat, you are welcome to use Kirby Park. 

However, keep in mind that we have NEW categories this year and besides time, elevation gain and furthest from the Y can play a part in your chance to be awarded!

Race Days: Friday, July 3rd at 12:00 AM to Sunday, July 5th at 10 PM

Registration: Open until July 5th at 12PM

Race Options: You can choose to enter the run or walk to Compete (awarded) or Finish (non-awarded). 

  • Compete – $20 fee for Run or Walk
  • Must submit proof of race results
  • Includes shirt and chance at award
  • Finish – $15 fee for Run or Walk
  • Participants should report that they have completed the race but do not need to report a time

How It Works

  • Starting on Friday, July 3rd at 12:00 AM, run or walk your 3 mile race at any point before the 10 PM cutoff on Sunday, July 5th and submit your results to berniesrun@wbymca.org
  • Proof of your race results must be in the form of a screenshot of GPS data used from running apps such as Garmin, Strava, MapMyRun, etc. and must show the elevation gain from the run.
  • Race results which show a negative elevation gain or do not meet a full 3 mile distance will be disqualified.
  • Participants are permitted to run the race on a treadmill as long as you run on at least 1% incline to prove elevation gain.

Pauly Friedman 5K Walk/Run

As the world continues the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, we understand the importance of healthy exercise, especially running, walking and the sense of normalcy it may bring you. While we can’t host an in-person event this year at Misericordia University for our 12th Annual Pauly Friedman 5K Family Walk/Run, we still want to provide you and your loved ones with the opportunity to participate. Therefore, we are holding our first ever VIRTUAL Pauly Friedman 5K Family Walk/Run! Proceeds will still benefit PA 211 NE/Help Line and we will be back next year at Misericordia University for an in-person event in August, 2021!

Registration: Sign up online from Thursday, May 14th to Wednesday, August 5th at 12 PM. 

Registration Fee: $15 per person or $10 per student

Race Dates: Saturday, August 1st at 12:00 AM to Wednesday, August 5th at 10 PM

How It Works: Starting on August 1st at 12:00 AM, run or walk your 5K race at any point before the 10 PM cutoff on Wednesday, August 5th and submit your results to families@fsanepa.org. Proof of your race results totaling 3.1 miles must be in the form of a screenshot of GPS data used from running apps such as Garmin, Strava, MapMyRun, etc. You are also permitted to run or walk the race on a treadmill.

*Please adhere to all social distancing guidelines while competing in this event.*

Awards: Medals will be awarded to overall Male and Female runners. Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, with best overall times in eight age categories. 

15 & Under  
70 & Up
Medals will be awarded for first place overall Male and Female walkers. Medals will also be awarded to the 2nd and 3rd place walkers.

About Pauly Friedman: Pauly Friedman was a Board Member at Family Service Association of NEPA (FSA). She served as Board Chair from 1988 through 1990 and organized the first fundraiser for FSA in modern history. Pauly also formed the Friends Committee, the volunteering fundraising arm of FSA. The Walk/Run is in memory of Pauly and her commitment to families. Proceeds raised from this event will benefit PA 211 NE/Help Line, Pauly’s favorite program at FSA.

EXPLORING AUTISM ACROSS THE SPECTRUM: Building inclusive communities

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Temple Grandin

Dr. Temple Grandin is a world-renowned animal behaviorist and autism spokesperson. Born in 1947, Grandin was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. At the time, autism was considered a form of brain injury. Her parents worked tirelessly to secure the best possible care and instruction for their daughter. Still, social interactions were difficult for Grandin through middle and high school.

Grandin persevered, going on to earn a degree in psychology from Franklin Pierce College, a master’s degree in animal science from Arizona State University and a doctoral degree in animal science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She first spoke publicly about autism in the 1980’s, and has since become an autism advocate, worldwide.

She is widely known and respected for her work regarding animal welfare, neurology and philosophy, and has authored best-selling books and articles on this subject. She has received several honorary degrees, is a fellow of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, and has been featured in television and radio shows. In 2010, HBO released the film Temple Grandin, which won five Emmy Awards.

In addition to presenting the opening keynote at the daylong Conference on DisAbility, Dr. Grandin will be featured at an evening Town Hall. At Dr. Grandin’s request there will be a special gathering especially for the youth of local 4-H groups.

Chris Banks, MBA., chief executive officer and president as of the Autism Society of America, and Jose Velasco, vice president of Product Management at SAP and SAP Autism at Work program will also deliver keynote addresses. The conference will also feature professional and family track sessions and a vendor expo.

The conference, to be held on the campus of the University of Scranton, is presented by the Panuska College of Professional Studies and the Edward R. Leahy, Jr. Endowment in partnership with AllOne Foundation.
