ALLONE CHARITIES, STEVEN A. COHEN MILITARY FAMILY CLINIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA PARTNER TO PROVIDE ACCESSIBLE MENTAL HEALTH CARE TO NEPA VETERANS
AllOne Charities awarded a $23,138 grant to the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania (Cohen Clinic at Penn) to provide cost-free evidence-based mental health treatment to post-9/11 veterans, service members, and military families in the region.
The Cohen Clinic at Penn is an outpatient mental health clinic serving veterans, service members, and military families across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of veterans, service members, and military families.
The new partnership with AllOne Charities brings the Cohen Clinic’s expert clinical care to the region, with a focus on high-risk communities such as Carbon County, which has the highest veteran suicide rate in the commonwealth, and high-risk groups such as younger post-9/11 veterans.
Dr. Leah Blain, a psychologist and the clinic director at the Cohen Clinic at Penn stresses the numerous barriers – from cost and transportation to stigma and confidentiality concerns – that often keep veterans, service members, and their loved ones from seeking mental health treatment. “There’s good news,” Blain said, “which is that treatment is available and treatment works. The Cohen Clinic at Penn uses telehealth to bring Penn’s expert mental health care to this under-resourced region.”
The AllOne Charities grant supports a new program focused on preventing suicide in NEPA’s veteran and military communities, which is home to approximately 12,869 post-9/11 veterans, National Guard members, Reservists, and thousands more military-connected spouses and children. Grant funds will cover the cost of clinical assessment, therapy, case management, and other supports designed to increase treatment efficacy and ensure clients achieve the best possible treatment outcomes.
The Cohen Clinic’s program is designed to increase NEPA veterans’ access to culturally competent care, screen for suicide risk and prevent suicide, and expand the clinic’s evidence-based treatment to NEPA’s veteran and military community. The goal is to achieve long-term mental health gains, save lives, and support veteran/military families in the region.
AllOne Charities’ support is matched by the Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization supporting a nationwide system of mental health clinics.
